To kill Spambots

Postby systemcat » Mon Feb 19, 2007 6:05 pm

I emailed Systemcat. I am a moderator, but I can't get to the delete key...

Up until recently this forum has never had an issue with this, "Spambots" as their called in the scifisite.net forum. I can't ban the person making these posts because they aren't registered but I can ban their IP addresses. Really stocked the delete button doesn't show up for you QL . My only guesses are: there is a bug in the forum keeping it from you or the delete button here looks different than the delete button your used to at Al's Place. The delete button here looks like this (x) in it's best sense through type. This button can be found at the top of a post along with a few others.

Thanks Erin,

I didn't know it could not be tracked. This is the first time this has ever happened in the forum, as far as I know.

But, Thanks again for getting rid of it. I appreciate it.

I think everybody appreciates it, that's why I got rid of it. There was one other post like it that happened a few days ago. Some spammer tagged it into the BSG post.

It's bad enough getting them in your e-mail. [depri] I don't know if its normal or what. But before they changed servers, it didn't happen in the forum. As far as I know of.

I just finished writing Chapter 6 of my story and I have the out-line of Chapter 7 going right now.

To try to stop the spamming I've disabled guest posting through out most of the forum.

Your welcome QL, recently gave you the power to mod. over the whole forum because of this spamming issue, hope you don't mind. Another thing I've done over this spamming issue is make it when people sign up they have to type in a series of letters or numbers they see ... I'm sure any one reading this has had to do this at least once or twice when signing up for some thing on the net. It's used to try to keep spambots from signing up in forums.

Glad you like it and welcome to the forum yourfriend. :flower:
Hope to see more posts from you in the future, most of this forum's members are too shy to do so. I don't know why the Star-Port is down but hopefully it will be back up again soon.

Speaking of spambots, I believe there are about a dozen on this forum- most of the zero-posters with websites leading to pharmaceutical-related products are the culprits. (I moderate for two separate forums and pretty much can sniff them out by now.)

Leaving them be won't cause any harm, but they just take up space.

One of my own personal tactics is to use the Word Censor to foul up their posts. It won't change their links, but anyone reading their threads will get mighty confused! :joker:

Example: a spammer tries to post a link to an adult site and uses the "V" word- his post comes out as, "Check out my [collection of Guatemalan poetry!]

(Priceless...)

I think I've found the bug that's keeping members from posting and giving messages to them saying they're banned.

-------------------------------------------------------

Please note that entering a range of IP addresses results in all the addresses between the start and end being added to the banlist. Attempts will be made to minimise the number of addresses added to the database by introducing wildcards automatically where appropriate. If you really must enter a range, try to keep it small or better yet state specific addresses.

--------------------------------------------------------

Think I've fixed this false banning of members. Sorry to any one who thought they were banned.
